William has been teaching at Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design here for 12 years, both in the illustration path of the BA Graphic Communication Design Programme and in short courses. He has recently been teaching at London’s relatively new, prestigious House of Illustration. William received two degrees in architecture from Pratt Institute in in New York City, which is one of the top design and art schools in the US. He taught at Pratt after graduating and later at Florida International University. Besides teaching, William has worked as a writer, architectural designer, illustrator and set designer. He presently works freelance in the TV/film industry as a storyboard artist. His last film project of note on was Dracula, for BBC and Netflix. William has been emersed in the world of art and design starting as a youngster, with family and family friends who were designers, sculptors, painters and photographers. He has always had a keen interest in art, design, art history and art management, observing from the inside how the industry works and the arts change. William presently enamored with teaching art history and management, finding that this allows him to weave together his own experiences in the art world with an expanding realm of knowledge from outside sources. Very little of his teaching is done as a ‘talking head.’ He much prefers using images and videos to present ideas and like to interact with students in developing them.
How does a work of art become an integral part of art history? Modern and Contemporary Western Art offers an introduction to the histories of Western modern and contemporary art and provides a foundation in the knowledge and skills of art history. Focusing on critical figures including Manet, Cassat, Picasso, Duchamp, and Koons, as well as essential styles and movements such as Cubism, Surrealism, Pop Art, and Minimalism, this course moves from charting the rise of Impressionism in nineteenth-century Paris to examining the impact of globalization on art practice in the twenty-first century. Each week’s online discussions and activities lead students through the relevant themes of a particular period, so students can develop their visual analysis skillset and practice writing and discussing art with specific and essential terminology. We are aiming to :
To identify and define essential terminology used in art historical practice and scholarly research.
To recognize and describe styles and periods in Western art history from the 1860’s to the present day.
To define and implement vocabulary to communicate confidently and effectively about art and artists.
To synthesize compelling analytical arguments around artworks and artists.
To evaluate evidence from a range of scholarly sources relating to art.
